IN KINDERGARTEN: We learn to name and write letters and numbers. We practice the sounds each letter makes to prepare us for decoding new words and stretching out words for writing from our own experiences. We learn sight words, word families, and rhyming patterns to help us read books fluently and with confidence. We ask & answer questions about stories & events. We retell beginning, middle, & end, and identify the main idea and give suporting details or evidence. We learn about our 5 senses, Earth materials, and Living Things in Science. We learn how to make friends and keep ourselves healthy & safe while we explore our world in Social Studies. We describe position (above, on, below, under, beside, next to, behind, in front). We measure objects by length, weight, and height. We count to 100, add & subtract to 5 fluently & to 10 using strategies like counting on, decomposing, & one to one correspondance. We compare objects and numbers as greater than, less than, or equal to each other (same). We sequence numbers and count on from any number within 100. We name 2D and 3D shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon... and sphere, cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, and cone) and describe how they are alike and different (corners/vertices, flat surfaces & shapes, sides/edges).
Home Routines: Your child will bring home activities to do with family members and caregivers. The Red and Green Folders travel back and forth from school in your child's backpack. Please review Red Folder & remove papers every night. Read 15 minutes a night with your child. Read the Green Folder activities outlines in the monthly calendar and help your child write & talk about their answers. There is a 15 minute activity to do Monday through Thursday night, & I keep the Green Homework folder over the weekend to assess progress. On the Weekends, spend time outside exploring & enjoying life through the eyes of your child!
Special Events: During the school year, we visit Post Family Farm to pick pumpkins and learn about farm animals. We take two weeks of swimming lessons at the Holland Aquatic Center. We have three class parties: Harvest Blessings Party, Polar Express party, and a Valentine/100th day of School party. In May, we review Water Safety & return to the Holland Aquatic Center for fun in the Splash Zone. To celebrate the end of our school year, we plan a Kindergarten Picnic & invite parents to help with fun outdoor activities.
